Historical Notice: Venetian patrician house, including two doges of Venice in the 17th century. Depicted here is the winged lion, symbol of Saint Mark and emblem of Venice, holding the coat-of-arms of Valier, instead of the usual Bible. The composition, dated 1696, decorates the barrel of a cannon, part of a battery positioned over the sea, at the city of Nafplio. It was probably used during the TurkishVenetian War of 16841699. Nafplio was under Venetian rule during two periods, from 1388 to 1540 and from 1686 to 1715.
