Heraldic motif | 1478

Historical Notice: A crusader institution par excellence, the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem adopted naturally as its emblem a white cross on a red field (in heraldic terminology “Gules a cross argent”). Even after the adoption of the eight-pointed cross (Maltese cross) in the 16th c., the simple Greek cross was still used in most heraldic depictions. This particular cross is part of a heraldic ensemble which was posed on the walls of Kos in 1478. Kos was occupied by the Hospitallers from the beginning of the 14th century to 1522.
