Η εκκλησία αυτή χτίστηκε το 1412, σύμφωνα με την απογραφή εκκλησιών της Χίου. Στην αρχή ήταν μικρό καθώς είχε μόνο καμάρες και ένα κλίτος. Επειδή όμως έπρεπε να καλύψει τις λατρευτικές ανάγκες όλου του χωριού, αποφάσισαν να προσθέσουν ένα δεύτερο κλίτος με ενιαία στέγη. Η επέκταση αυτή έγινε το 1794. Η εκκλησία του Παλαιού Ταξιάρχη, μέσα στον Μεσαιωνικό φρουριακό οικισμό των Μεστών, είναι μια μονόκλιτη καμαροσκέπαστη βασιλική, η οποία το 1714 έγινε δίκλιτη. Στο παλιό τμήμα του ναού υπάρχουν τυφλές αψίδες με διακοσμητικά στόμια μπουκαλιών και η κυκλική κόγχη του ιερού, ενώ το βόρειο κλίτος καλύπτεται με σταυροθόλια. Αξίζει να σημειωθούν οι αξιόλογες τοιχογραφίες που έχουν αποκαλυφθεί, καθώς και το ξυλόγλυπτο τέμπλο του ναού, με πολλές παραστάσεις από την Παλαιά και Καινή Διαθήκη, έργο του 1833, που αποτελεί αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα της υψηλής τοπικής ξυλογλυπτικής τέχνης. .

This church has been built in 1412, according to the census of churches of Chios. In the beginning, it was small as it had only arches and one aisle. But due to the fact that it had to cover the needs of worship of the whole village, they decided to add a second aisle with a united roof. This expansion took place in 1794. The church of Old Taxiarchis, inside the Medieval fortress settlement of Mesta, is a single-aisled vaulted basilica, which in 1714 became double-aisled. In the old part of the church, there are blind apses with decorative bottle mouths and the circular alcove of the sanctuary, while the north aisle is covered with cross vaults. It is worth noting the remarkable frescoes that have been uncovered, as well as the church's wood-carved iconostasis, with many representations from the Old and New Testaments, a work of 1833, which is a representative sample of the high local wood-carving Art.
