Panagia lighthouse, off Paxoi coast

Beam 9 miles and focal height 26 meters. A square stone tower 8 meters high above the lighthouse keeper's residence. It was built by the English during the Ionian Eptanisiani period and is located on the islet of Madonna, next to the church of Panagia, outside the port of Gaios. Gaios is the largest settlement and the seat of the Municipality of Paxos. It was named after Saint Gaios, a disciple of the Apostle Paul from Corinth, who died and was buried in Paxos. The lighthouse's machinery was destroyed by the Germans in 1941 and reopened in 1946. Today the lighthouse continues to operate as a surveillance station at the same location, with a beam of 9 miles and modern machinery.
Φωτοβολία 9 μίλια και εστιακό ύψος 26 μέτρα. Πύργος λιθόκτιστος τετράγωνος ύψους 8 μέτρων επάνω στην κατοικία των φαροφυλάκων. Χτίστηκε από τους Άγγλους την περίοδο της Ιονίου Επτανησιακής Πολιτείας και βρίσκεται στη νησίδα Μαντόννα, δίπλα στην εκκλησία της Παναγίας, έξω από το λιμάνι του Γάιου. Ο Γάιος είναι ο μεγαλύτερος οικισμός και η έδρα του Δήμου Παξών. Πήρε το όνομά του από τον Άγιο Γάιο, μαθητή του Αποστόλου Παύλου από την Κόρινθο, ο οποίος πέθανε και ενταφιάστηκε στους Παξούς. Το μηχάνημα του φάρου καταστράφηκε από τους Γερμανούς το 1941 και επαναλειτούργησε το 1946. Σήμερα ο φάρος συνεχίζει να λειτουργεί ως επιτηρούμενος στο ίδιο σημείο, με φωτοβολία 9 μιλίων και σύγχρονο μηχάνημα.
