Πλάι στο κατά πολλούς πιο μεγαλειώδες συμφωνικό έργο όλων των εποχών, την Ενάτη του Beethoven (Ωδή στη Χαρά), αλλά και πίσω από τις ευφάνταστες παραλλαγές του Saint-Saëns, κυριαρχεί η μορφή του «αυτοκράτορα του πιάνου» Franz Liszt, ο οποίος γνώρισε ως παιδί τον Beethoven και χρόνια αργότερα καθοδήγησε τα συνθετικά βήματα του Saint-Saëns. Μεταγράφοντας την Ενάτη Συμφωνία για δύο πιάνα, ο Liszt ανέδειξε μοναδικά την αστείρευτη δραματικότητά της, μέσα από τα ηχοχρώματα και την εκφραστική δύναμη του οργάνου. Το πνεύμα της δεξιοτεχνίας του Liszt διέπει άλλωστε και τις απαιτητικές, ευφάνταστες παραλλαγές του Saint-Saëns πάνω σε ένα σύντομο θέμα από τη Σονάτα αρ. 18 του Beethoven.

Next to what many consider the greatest symphonic work of all time, Beethoven's Ninth (Ode to Joy), but also behind the imaginative variations of Saint-Saëns, dominates the figure of the "emperor of the piano" Franz Liszt, known as child Beethoven and years later guided the compositional steps of Saint-Saëns. By transcribing the Ninth Symphony for two pianos, Liszt uniquely highlighted its endless drama, through the timbres and expressive power of the instrument. The spirit of Liszt's virtuosity also governs Saint-Saëns' demanding, imaginative variations on a short theme from Sonata no. 18 by Beethoven.
