The cemetery of Agios Onoufrios is a unique early Christian cemetery on the slopes of St. Nicholas Mountain in Methoni. The graves are organised in six chambers, carved in the soft porous rock. They are of two types: arcosolia and pit graves. At the beginning of the arches of the arcosolia there are niches for placing oil lamps, whereas it seems that the ancient custom of offering honours to the dead is continuing, as banks and offerings' tables have been carved on the peripheral walls of the chambers. The interior of the graves had been decorated with wall paintings, although few of them are still extant, at least fom the early Christian phase.
