Ο θολωτός τάφος των Νιχωρίων είναι ο μεγαλύτερος και πλουσιότερος σε ευρήματα μυκηναϊκός τάφος της Μεσσηνίας παρόλο που είχε συληθεί κατά την αρχαιότητα. Κατασκευάστηκε σε περίοπτη θέση στην ΒΔ άκρη της ακρόπολης των Νιχωρίων. Η εξέχουσα κοινωνική θέση των ατόμων που είχαν ενταφιασθεί σε αυτόν, μαρτυρείται και από τις πλούσιες προσφορές (κτερίσματα), που συνόδευαν τους νεκρούς: κεραμική υψηλής ποιότητας, σφραγιδόλιθοι από ημιπολύτιμους λίθους και μικροαντικείμενα από χρυσό, ελεφαντόδοντο και φαγεντιανή. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της ακμής του οικισμού των Νιχωρίων (1400π.Χ.-1200π.Χ.). Βρέθηκαν όμως και ίχνη μεταγενέστερης χρήσης του κατά την κλασική περίοδο που συνδέονται με τη λατρεία προγόνων, πρακτική που συνηθιζόταν στη Μεσσηνία. (EL)
The tholos tomb of Nichoria is the largest and richest in finds Mycenaean tomb of Messenia, although it had been looted in the past. It was constructed at a prominent position on the NW edge of the Nichoria acropolis. The high social class of the deceased is attested by the rich grave goods accompanying them: high-quality pottery, sealing gems, miniatues made of gold, fayence and ivory etc. Its usage is placed chronologically within the peak period of the Nichoria settlement, i.e. in LH III (1400-1200 B.C.). Traces of its use in the late classical period are also attested, a fact related to the cult of the ancestors, a usual practice in Messenia. (EN)
