Η χρήση των αεριωθητών έδωσε στα αεροσκάφη, από τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1930 που πρωτοχρησιμοποιήθηκαν, μεγαλύτερη ώθηση με μικρότερο βάρος και λιγότερους κραδασμούς από το συμβατικό συνδυασμό του εμβολοφόρου κινητήρα και έλικας. Κατά τη διάρκεια του Β Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου τα πλεονεκτήματα των αεριωθούμενων ήταν η ικανότητά τους να ανυψωθούν γρήγορα για να εμποδίσουν τα βομβαρδιστικά, καθώς επίσης να πετάξουν γρηγορότερα από τα βομβαρδιστικά ή τα εχθρικά καταδιωκτικά.",
