Ο ναός της Παναγίας των Βλαχερνών, που στεγάζει το αγίασμα, κτίστηκε στη θέση παλαιότερου ναού, τον οποίο ίδρυσε η αυτοκράτειρα Πουλχερία το 436. Ο τελευταίος καταστράφηκε από πυρκαγιά το 1434. Στη θέση των δύο προηγούμενων ανεγέρθηκε ο νέος ναός το 1869 με χρηματοδότηση της συντεχνίας των Ελλήνων γουναράδων της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Στην χαλκογραφία, στην άνω ζώνη, παριστάνεται η Παναγία στον τύπο της Οδηγήτριας μέσα σε ακτινωτή δόξα και σύννεφο με τρία χερουβείμ. Στην κάτω ζώνη, ανάμεσα σε δύο δένδρα, απεικονίζεται τρίκλιτος ναός με δίρριχτες στέγες. Την πρόσοψη του κτιρίου διατρέχει στέγαστρο με κληματαριά. Η χαλκογραφία αποτελεί τυπικό παράδειγμα τυπωμάτων που διανέμονταν στους πιστούς την ημέρα του εορτασμού του ναού, η συγκεκριμένη στις 2 Ιουλίου, όπως διαβάζουμε στην επιγραφή στη βάση της εικόνας.The Church of the Virgin Mary of Blachernae with the Hagiasma (sacred spring) was built on the site of an earlier church founded by Empress Pulcheria in 436 and razed to the ground in 1434. In 1869, the Constantinople furriers’ guild funded the construction of a new church. In the upper part of the engraving the Virgin Mary Hodegetria is depicted in glory surrounded with rays and a cloud with three cherubim. The lower half of the sheet is occupied by the three-nave Church of St. Mary of Blachernae with pitched roofs. This is a typical example of a paper icon, which was given to the pilgrims on the day of the celebration of the church.
