Engraver unknown. \nThe Virgin, holding Christ in her arms, is shown emerging from amongst roses and other flowers in the iconographic type of “the Unfading Rose” (Rodon to Amaranton). The two holy figures are dressed in luxurious garments, wear crowns on their heads, and hold a sceptre in one hand; in the other Christ holds a globe, a symbol of his power, and the Virgin has a palm branch, which has reference to deification. The Greek and Slavonic inscription at the bottom is an extract from the Akathistos Hymn. \nThe iconographic type of the Virgin depicted as “the Unfading Rose” is thought to have been created in the cosmopolitan, learned Orthodox circles of Constantinople in the 18th century. It was based on a western iconographic type of the Virgin, probably depicting the Madonna del Rosario, and elaborated with ideas drawn from the Akathistos Hymn, sung in the Orthodox Church in honour of the Virgin. This type was very common in icons and engravings of the 18th and 19th century. [Source: A. Χαράκτης: άγνωστος. \nΜέσα από τριαντάφυλλα και λουλούδια μοιάζει να αναδύεται η Παναγία με το Χριστό στον εικονογραφικό τύπο «Ρόδον το Αμάραντον». Τα δύο ιερά πρόσωπα φορούν πολυτελή ενδύματα, έχουν στα κεφάλια στέμματα κρατούν στο ένα χέρι σκήπτρο και στο άλλο, ο Χριστός σφαίρα, σύμβολο εξουσίας και η Παναγία ένα κλάδο βαΐων, σημειολογική αναφορά αποθέωσης. Το κείμενο κάτω, στα ελληνικά και σλαβονικά, είναι απόσπασμα από τον Ακάθιστο Ύμνο.\nΟ εικονογραφικός τύπος της Παναγίας ως «Ρόδον το Αμάραντον» θεωρείται δημιούργημα του ορθόδοξου λόγιου κοσμοπολίτικου περιβάλλοντος της Κωνσταντινούπολης το 18ο αι. Προέκυψε με αφετηρία κάποιο δυτικό εικονογραφικό θέμα της Παναγίας, πιθανότατα παράσταση της «Θεοτόκου του Ροδαρίου», και επεξεργασία του θέματος με έννοιες από τον Ακάθιστο Ύμνο, ο οποίος ψάλλεται από την ορθόδοξη εκκλησία προς τιμήν της Θεοτόκου. Ο τύπος αυτός της Παναγίας είχε μεγάλη διάδοση σε εικόνες και χαρακτικά κατά τον 18ο και 19ο αι. [Πηγή: Α. Τούρτα και Στ.
