Κατά την περίοδο επιστροφής της από το Κίεβο (φθινόπωρο 1911) ως την αναχώρησή της για το Παρίσι (Νοέμβριο 1912) η Popova αρχίζει να ασχολείται με τα σύγχρονα ρεύματα στη ζωγραφική. Στα μέσα του 1912 εργάζεται στον «Πύργο» του Tatlin και την ίδια εποχή επισκέπτεται τη συλλογή S. Shchukin όπου γνωρίζει έργα του Cézanne και Gauguin.
