Kalamaria was founded in 1922 as a settlement of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. On 1/1/1943 it became a Municipality with an area of 6.5 km2 and a population of 10,500 residents. Today it has an area of 7.2 km2 and a population of 92,238 residents (according to the 2021 population census) It is built on the eastern coast of Thermaikos Gulf and its beach has a length of 4.5 km
