Patras lighthouse

The first lighthouse was lit in 1858 and operated at the head of the originally wooden pier of Agios Nikolaos in the port of Patras. In 1865 the wooden lighthouse tower was destroyed in a storm and so in the period 1874–1878 a 13-meter-high stone cylindrical tower was constructed, which quickly became a landmark for the city. This lighthouse is one of the few that was not destroyed by the Germans in 1941 and it seemed “lucky” again when the process of blowing it up by the retreating Germans was interrupted at the last moment in 1944, following the intervention of the port’s navigator, H. Michopoulos. The lighthouse of Agios Nikolaos, Port of Patras, has the distinction of having survived World War II, but was demolished in 1967 during the mayoralty of Golfinopoulos. Following the intervention of local bodies, a copy of the old lighthouse was constructed, which was placed in a different location with no other use than as a lighthouse.
Ο πρώτος φανός άναψε το 1858 και λειτούργησε στην κεφαλή του αρχικά ξύλινου μόλου του Αγίου Νικολάου του λιμένα Πατρών. Το 1865 ο ξύλινος πύργος του φανού καταστράφηκε σε μια κακοκαιρία και έτσι την περίοδο 1874–1878 κατασκευάστηκε πέτρινος κυλινδρικός πύργος ύψους 13 μέτρων, που γρήγορα έγινε τοπόσημο για την πόλη. Ο φάρος αυτός είναι ένας από τους ελάχιστους που δεν καταστράφηκαν από τους Γερμανούς το 1941 και φάνηκε εκ νέου «τυχερός», όταν την τελευταία στιγμή διακόπηκε η διαδικασία ανατίναξής του από τους υποχωρούντες Γερμανούς το 1944, κατόπιν παρέμβασης του πλοηγού του λιμανιού, Η. Μιχόπουλου. Ο φάρος του Αγίου Νικολάου Λιμένος Πατρών έχει την ιδιαιτερότητα ότι επιβίωσε του Β΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, αλλά κατεδαφίστηκε το 1967 επί δημαρχίας Γκολφινόπουλου. Κατόπιν παρέμβασης τοπικών φορέων κατασκευάστηκε ένα αντίγραφο του παλιού φάρου, το οποίο τοποθετήθηκε σε διαφορετικό σημείο με κάθε άλλη παρά φαρική χρήση πλέον.
