The lighthouse at the Kules (Fortress) of Heraklion, Crete

Beam 6 miles and focal height 23 meters. It was a minaret-shaped tower with three sections of different cross-section, approximately like the lighthouse of Chania. It is located at the end of the northern breakwater of the old harbor. It was one of the oldest lighthouses in the Mediterranean. It initially operated as an open flame torch and then, in 1839 (during the years of the Egyptian occupation 1830–1840), it operated with modern technology for its time, according to the English beacons of 1847 and 1859. In 1864 it came under the jurisdiction of the French Ottoman Lighthouse Society and in 1913, when Crete was united with Greece, it joined the Greek Lighthouse Network. Since 1936 it has been described as a 9-meter-high concrete tower and in images of the time the upper cylindrical part is missing. In 1941 it was destroyed by the Germans and reopened in 1945 as a harbor lighthouse. Today only the base of the building survives.
Φωτοβολία 6 μίλια και εστιακό ύψος 23 μέτρα. Ήταν πύργος σε σχήμα μιναρέ με τρία τμήματα διαφορετικής διατομής, περίπου όπως και ο φάρος των Χανίων. Βρίσκεται στην άκρη του βόρειου λιμενοβραχίονα του παλιού λιμανιού. Ήταν από τους παλαιότερους φάρους της Μεσογείου. Λειτούργησε αρχικά ως πυρσός ανοικτής φλόγας και στη συνέχεια, το 1839 (στα χρόνια της Αιγυπτιακής κατοχής 1830–1840), λειτούργησε με τη σύγχρονη για την εποχή του τεχνολογία, σύμφωνα με τους αγγλικούς φαροδείκτες του 1847 και 1859. Το 1864 περιήλθε στη δικαιοδοσία της Γαλλικής Εταιρείας Οθωμανικών Φάρων και το 1913 όταν έγινε η ένωση της Κρήτης με την Ελλάδα εντάχθηκε στο Ελληνικό Φαρικό Δίκτυο. Από το 1936 περιγράφεται ως πύργος ύψους 9 μέτρων από σκυρόδεμα και σε εικόνες της εποχής το επάνω κυλινδρικό τμήμα δεν υπάρχει. Το 1941 καταστράφηκε από τους Γερμανούς και επαναλειτούργησε το 1945 ως φανός λιμένος. Σήμερα σώζεται μόνο η βάση του κτίσματος.
