Το μέγαρο ερμηνεύτηκε από τον Evans ως «Αίθουσα των Διπλών Πελέκεων», λόγω του ιερού συμβόλου του διπλού πέλεκυ που βρέθηκε χαραγμένος στον δυτικότερο τοίχο. Eρμηνεύτηκε από τον Evans ως το «Μέγαρο του Βασιλέα» και ονομάστηκε «Αίθουσα των Διπλών Πελέκεων». Μολονότι η ιδιαίτερη πολυτέλεια των διαμερισμάτων αυτών είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη, η ταύτισή τους με βασιλικά διαμερίσματα θεωρείται σήμερα αβέβαιη. Ο κεντρικός χώρος έχει ανοίγματα σε τρεις πλευρές και γι' αυτό ονομάζεται «πολύθυρον» (σύστημα με πολλαπλές θύρες). Έχει δάπεδο από πλάκα και οι τοίχοι του ήταν στολισμένοι με γυψόπλακες και τοιχογραφίες. Ο χώρος ανάμεσα στο «πολύθυρον» και το φωτεινό πηγάδι χρησιμοποιούνταν ως αίθουσα υποδοχής. Εδώ βρέθηκαν ίχνη ξύλινης κατασκευής. Ο Έβανς ανακατασκεύασε έναν ξύλινο θρόνο σε αυτό το σημείο.

The megaron was conventionally named by Evans the “Hall of the Double Axes”, due to the sacred symbol of the double axe found carved into the wall of the inner lightwell. He also thought that it was the place of residence of the King of Knossos. Although the sumptuousness of these rooms is indisputable, their identification as royal apartments are considered uncertain today. The central area has openings on three sides and is therefore called a "polythyron" (system with multiple doorways). It has a slab floor and its walls were embellished with gypsum slabs and frescoes. The area between the "polythyron" and the light well was used as a reception hall. Traces of wooden construction were found here. Evans reconstructed a wooden throne at this spot.
