To 1931 o John Vassos εξέδωσε τη Φοβία (Phobia), ένα βιβλίο που ο ίδιος θεωρούσε ως «το σημαντικότερο έργο της ζωής του». Το έργο αυτό, το οποίο αποτελείται από 24 ασπρόμαυρες εικονογραφήσεις, περιγράφει τις κυριότερες φοβίες του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου. Η κάθε εικόνα συνοδεύεται από ένα κείμενο-περιγραφή της κάθε φοβίας, που συνέταξε ο δημιουργός σε συνεργασία με τον διακεκριμένο ψυχίατρο Harry Stack Sullivan. Στην επονομαζόμενη φωτολιθογραφία "Batophobia", ο άνθρωπος έχει τον φόβο να βρίσκεται δίπλα σε ψηλά κτήρια με τον κίνδυνο να πέσουν αντικείμενα πάνω του.

In 1931 John Vassos published Phobia, a book that he considered "the most important work of his life". This work, which consists of 24 black and white illustrations, describes the main phobias of modern man. Each illustration is accompanied by a text description of each phobia, written by the author in collaboration with the eminent psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan.
