Institution : Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive - Cultural Foundation of the National Bank Of Greece

The digitized collections of the Greek Literary and Historical Archive (ELIA) of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (MIET) comprise a large-scale and multifaceted corpus of 112,558 digital items, spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The collection offers a comprehensive documentation of modern Greek cultural, social, and intellectual life through a wide range of material types and archival units.

The digital collection is dominated by two-dimensional graphic materials (over 96,000 items), with a particularly strong representation of photographic material, including photographs and photographic negatives, alongside prints, posters, postcards, and other forms of ephemera. These materials document everyday life, artistic production, public events, and visual culture across different historical periods.

A substantial body of textual material (over 14,000 items) includes periodicals, newspapers, advertisements, documents, and archival records, reflecting the evolution of public discourse, publishing activity, and socio-political developments. The presence of diaries, notebooks, and selected correspondence further enriches the archival and research value of the collection.

The collection is further enhanced by significant groups of cultural production materials, including theatre-related documentation, cinema records, and a notable corpus of musical scores. Cartographic materials, such as maps, contribute to the spatial documentation of historical and cultural transformations.

Organized into distinct sub-collections—such as the Photographic Archive, Theatre Archive, Newspapers and Periodicals Archive, Music Scores Archive, Ephemera Archive, and Maps Archive—the repository provides structured access to diverse facets of modern Greek heritage. Smaller yet notable groups include materials related to the Greek diaspora, particularly in Egypt, as well as rare three-dimensional objects such as toys.

Overall, the ELIA digital collections constitute a rich and coherent research infrastructure, offering valuable insights into the cultural history of modern Greece through a wide spectrum of primary sources and documentary evidence.
