The Hellenic Mosaic digital collection brings together more than 8,000 items documenting two centuries of Greek history and collective memory, from the mid-19th century to the present day. It is a participatory digital initiative that brings together cultural institutions, archives, museums, associations, and Greek communities in Greece and abroad, creating a multifaceted repository dedicated to the historical trajectories and experiences of Hellenism.
The collection consists primarily of historical documents, letters, and photographs, complemented by postcards, paintings, architectural drawings, maps, and records associated with landmarks, monuments, buildings, and archaeological sites. The material originates from collaborations with the General State Archives of Greece, museums, cultural and refugee associations, as well as organizations of the Greek diaspora, offering multiple perspectives on the history and culture of Hellenism.
Particular emphasis is placed on themes relating to refugee and diaspora communities, military conflicts, rural life, local traditions, and sports heritage, including the archive of the Thessaloniki Gymnastic Club “Iraklis”. Through this rich body of material, the collection highlights the journeys of individuals and communities, population movements, cultural exchanges, and the historical experiences that have shaped the Greek world both within and beyond the borders of Greece.
