Institution : Thessaloniki Olympic Museum
The digital collection of the Olympic Museum comprises over 1,800 items and offers a rich, multi-layered documentation of the history and material culture of sport, with particular emphasis on the Olympic Games and the Olympic movement from the 19th to the 21st century.
At its core, the collection is distinguished by a substantial body of three-dimensional objects, including commemorative artefacts, medals, trophies, athletic equipment, official uniforms, and personal accessories. These objects vividly reflect both the ceremonial and competitive dimensions of the Olympic Games, highlighting the symbolic, aesthetic, and functional aspects of athletic culture.
Complementing this material corpus is a significant set of textual documents—such as newspaper clippings, archival records, letters, manuscripts, and publications—which provide historical context and document the institutional, social, and communicative dimensions of the Games. In parallel, two-dimensional materials, including prints, posters, postcards, stamps, and photographs, contribute to a visual narrative of the Olympic phenomenon and its public representation over time.
Through this diversity of materials, the collection captures the evolution of the Olympic ideal, its global reach, and its enduring cultural significance.
