Institution : Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki – MOMus

The approximately 7,000 items from the Digital Collections of the Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus), made available through SearchCulture.gr, constitute a representative sample of the breadth and diversity of the Organisation’s holdings, spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

The composition of the digital corpus is characterized by the predominance of two-dimensional graphic materials (nearly 5,500 items), including drawings, sketches, photographs, paintings, and prints, reflecting the evolution of artistic expression from modernism to contemporary practices. At the same time, a substantial body of textual material—manuscripts, clippings, periodicals, catalogues, and other archival documents—provides critical documentation of the historical, theoretical, and exhibition context of artistic production.

Three-dimensional objects and works of art, such as sculptures, installations, maquettes, and reliefs, highlight the shift toward expanded forms of artistic practice, further broadening the scope of the collection to include interdisciplinary and intermedia approaches.

This digital corpus draws on the individual collections of MOMus, most notably the Kostakis Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, which includes works of the Russian avant-garde (1900–1930), as well as holdings from the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, and the Alex Mylona Museum.

The collection features works by major Greek and international artists, including Elli Sougioultzoglou-Seraidari (Nelly’s), Yannis Tsarouchis, and Stephen Antonakos, and incorporates the Greek section of the Fred Boissonnas archive, along with significant donations such as that of Alexander Iolas. Altogether, it forms a coherent and well-documented corpus that highlights modern Greek and contemporary artistic production within an international context.
