Patient spittoon. Tuberculosis patients were required to carry a pocket spittoon to reduce the spread of the disease. The spittoon was used to collect sputum through the larger opening, and when it was full, it could be emptied through the smaller opening. The safest method of disposing of the contents was through incineration. Both openings are fitted with metal caps. This particular model, known as the "Blue Henry," is made of cobalt blue glass. It dates back to the period from the 1900s to the 1920s.
