Όργανο για τον προσδιορισμό της πορείας του πλοίου. Η λειτουργία της βασίζεται στις ιδιότητες του οριζόντια προσανατολισμένου γυροσκοπίου. Σε αντίθεση με την μαγνητική πυξίδα (βλ. Τ.Μ.Θ. 00719) δεν υπόκειται σε σφάλματα από την ύπαρξη στο πλοίο σιδερένιων όγκων και μαγνητικών πεδίων.
