Το χαρακτικό αυτό προσφέρει μια εικονογράφηση της ιστορίας και των θρύλων που σχετίζονται με τη Μονή Δοχειαρίου, αν και δεν απεικονίζει το ίδιο το μοναστήρι. Οι αρχαιότερες μαρτυρίες για τη μονή χρονολογούνται στις αρχές του 11ου αι. και την τοποθετούν χωρικά στη Δάφνη, το λιμάνι του Αγίου Όρους. Την εποχή εκείνη η μονή ήταν αφιερωμένη στον Άγιο Νικόλαο. Το όνομα Δοχειαρίου προέρχεται από τον ιδρυτή της, τον μοναχό Ιωάννη, ο οποίος προηγουμένως ήταν δοχειάριος—υπεύθυνος για το λάδι και τα τρόφιμα—σε κάποια άλλη μονή, πιθανόν στη γειτονική του Ξηροποτάμου. Οι θρύλοι αναφέρουν ότι το μοναστήρι στη Δάφνη καταστράφηκε από τους Σαρακηνούς στα μέσα του 11ου αι., οπότε και μεταφέρθηκε στη σημερινή του θέση στη νότια ακτή της χερσονήσου. Τον 12ο αι. η μονή αφιερώθηκε στον αρχάγγελο Μιχαήλ, μετά από ένα θαύμα που έκανε ο ίδιος και στις αρχές του 14ου αι. η αφιέρωση επεκτάθηκε ώστε να συμπεριλάβει όλους τους αρχαγγέλους. Το μοναστήρι ανακαινίστηκε ριζικά το 1568 με χορηγία του Alexander Lapusneanu, πρίγκιπα της Μολδαβίας και της συζύγου του Roxana.
Η σύντομη αναφορά στην ιστορία του μοναστηριού διευκολύνει την κατανόηση της εικονογραφίας του χαρακτικού. Στο κέντρο της σύνθεσης απεικονίζεται η Σύναξη των αρχαγγέλων, το όνομα των οποίων τιμά το μοναστήρι. Οι σκηνές στο επάνω μέρος του χαρακτικού, από αριστερά προς τα δεξιά, απεικονίζουν το εν Χώναις θαύμα του αρχάγγελου Μιχαήλ, τη θαυματουργή εικόνα της Παναγίας Γοργοεπηκόου που ανήκει στο μοναστήρι και τον Άγιο Νικόλαο, τον αρχικό προστάτη της μονής. Το μικρό εικονίδιο κάτω δεξιά απεικονίζει τον αρχάγγελο Μιχαήλ έφιππο να καταδιώκει τους Σαρακηνούς. Τα υπόλοιπα μικρά εικονίδια απεικονίζουν θαύματα των αρχαγγέλων που συνδέονται με το μοναστήρι και εξηγούν την αλλαγή της αφιέρωσης από τον Άγιο Νικόλαο σε αυτούς. [Πηγή: A. This engraving offers a visual account of the history and legends associated with the Docheiariou Monastery, though it does not depict the monastery itself. The earliest evidence for the monastery goes back to the early 11th c., and locates it at Daphni, the port of Mount Athos. At this time, it was dedicated to St Nicholas. The name Docheiariou derives from its founder, the monk Ioannis, who had previously served as docheiarios—the official in charge of oil and food—at another monastery, possibly that of Xiropotamou close by. The legends record that the monastery at Daphni was destroyed by Saracens in the middle of the 11th c., at which point it moved to its present site on the south coast of the peninsula. In the 12th c. the monastery was dedicated to the archangel Michael, after a miracle worked by him, and the dedication was extended to include all the archangels at the beginning of the 14th c. The monastery underwent a radical renovation in 1568, at the expense of Alexander Lapusneanu, Prince of Moldavia, and his wife Roxana. This brief account of the history of the monastery illuminates the iconography of the engraving. In the centre of the composition is depicted the Synaxis (Gathering) of the archangels, whose name the monastery honours. The scenes at the top, from left to right, depict the Miracle at Chonai by the archangel Michael, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Gorgoepikoos owned by the monastery, and St Nicholas, its original patron saint. The small icon at bottom right has a depiction of the archangel Michael on horseback pursuing Saracens. The other small icons depict miracles connected with the monastery worked by the archangels, and account for the change of dedication to them from St Nicholas. [Source: A.
