Engraving with the Docheiariou Monastery, Mount Athos (EN)

Engraving with the Docheiariou Monastery. The core of the composition is occupied by the depiction of the monastery. As can be seen in other similar copper engravings, the engraver's effort to render the space realistically is evident. In the enclosed area of the monastery, created by its very buildings, the katholikon dominates. Short explanatory inscriptions identify the spaces that surround it, which probably remain the same in terms of their position and function from the time the engraving was printed until today. The litany of the monks gives the viewer an idea of the monastic life. Behind the monastery, the peak of Mount Athos is depicted on the right and scattered orchards and chapels of the monastery on the left. Below the ships and the sea indicate the location and the relationship of the monastery with the sea. The history and legends associated with the Monastery are depicted in the fifteen icons surrounding the central subject. Above, in the middle three, Saint Nicholas, the first patron of the monastery, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos, which is kept to this day in a special chapel, and the Synaxis (Gathering) of the Archangels, who are the patrons of the monastery, are depicted. Next to them, the Byzantine emperors who benefited the monastery are depicted. Below are the monks, founders of the monastery, and the bishop of Moldova Theophanis who retired to the monastery and was buried there. In the remaining icons scenes of miracles performed by the intervention of the archangels. In the dedicatory inscription below, it is stated that the engraving was printed in 1819 in Venice by the engraver Giannantonio Zuliani. The latter used as a model a copper engraving of 1779, printed on Mount Athos, which was apparently suggested to him by the priest-monks Stephanos and Neophytos who were in charge of printing the engraving in Venice.
