Παναγία Γαλακτοτροφούσα (EL)
The Virgin Galaktotrophousa (Lactans) (EN)

The engraving depicts the thaumaturgical icon of the Panagia Galaktotrophoussa, which is in a kelli in Karyes that is owned by Chelandari Monastery and is called the Typikareio of St Sabbas or simply the Typikario. According to Athonite legend, the first icon of the Galaktotrophoussa was originally in the Lavra of St Sabbas in Palestine. In the lower part of this engraving, St. Nicholas and St John the Baptist are portrayed in pearl-studded surrounds. In this the artist was repeating, with variations, an engraving of 1841, also produced in an Athonite workshop, in which the Panagia's breast and Christ's left hand have been effaced. Inscriptions in Slavonic, along the bottom and below the margin of the representation, indicate that the engraving was intended for an exclusively Slavonic-speaking public [Source: Α.
