Ιστορικό Σημείωμα: Δημιούργημα της εποχής των σταυροφοριών, ήταν φυσικό το Τάγμα του Οσπιταλίου του Αγίου Ιωάννου της Ιερουσαλήμ να φέρει ως έμβλημά του έναν λευκό σταυρό επί ερυθρού πεδίου. Ακόμη και μετά την υιοθέτηση του σταυρού με τις οκτώ οξύκορφες απολήξεις (Σταυρός της Μάλτας) κατά τον 16ο αι., στις περισσότερες εραλδικές παραστάσεις εξακολούθησε η χρήση του απλού Ελληνικού λεγόμενου Σταυρού. Η παρουσία υποστηριγμάτων που συνοδεύουν το θυρεό (στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση δύο αγγέλων), είναι αρκετά σπάνια στη Ρόδο, αλλά και γενικότερα στον ελληνικό χώρο. (EL)
Historical Notice: A crusader institution par excellence, the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem adopted naturally as its emblem a white cross on a red field (in heraldic terminology “Gules a cross argent”). Even after the adoption of the eight-pointed cross (Maltese cross) in the 16th c., the simple Greek cross was still used in most heraldic depictions. The presence of supporters depicted on either side of the shield (in this case, two angels), is rare in Rodos, and quite uncommon in the Greek areas in general. (EN)
