Ιστορικό Σημείωμα: Ο συγκεκριμένος θυρεός καλύπτει την ασπίδα του Αγίου Γεωργίου, σε τοιχογραφία του ναού του Σωτήρος Χριστού που βρίσκεται στο Φοίνικα Λουτρού Σφακίων. Παρά τη μικρή χρωματική παραλλαγή (μελανές ζώνες αντί των συνήθων κυανών), θεωρούμε ότι μπορεί βάσιμα να αποδοθεί στους Καλλέργηδες. Πρόκειται για τη γνωστή Κρητική αρχοντική οικογένεια, πιθανόν καταγόμενη από τους Φωκάδες, μια των 12 οικογενειών των αναφερομένων ως "Αρχοντόπουλων", ενδεχομένως βυζαντινής προέλευσης. Μέλη της πρωτοστάτησαν σε εξεγέρσεις κατά των Βενετών στην Κρήτη (13ος-14ος αι.), αργότερα όμως εντάχθηκαν στο σύστημα της βενετικής κυριαρχίας και τους αναγνωρίστηκε τίτλος βενετικής ευγενείας ("Nobili Veneti"). Απόγονοι της οικογένειας έλαβαν μέρος στην Επανάσταση του 1821, ανέλαβαν στρατιωτικά -κυρίως- αξιώματα στο Ελληνικό κράτος και πρωτοστάτησαν σε πολιτικούς και κοινωνικούς αγώνες (19ος-20ός αι.). (EL)

Historical Notice: This particular coat-of-arms covers the shield carried by Saint George on a fresco painted in the church of Sotir Christos. Although there is a slight difference of colour (sable/black bendlets, instead of the standard azure/blue), we propose its attribution to the Cretan noble family of Callergi (one of the 12 so-called "Archontopoula"). Its members played a leading role in revolts against the Venetians in Crete (13th-14th c.), but were later incorporated into the Venetian dominion system and received a title of Venetian nobility ("Nobili Veneti"). Descendents of the family participated in the Greek War of Independence, assumed into -mainly military- offices in the Greek state and took an active part in various political and social struggles (19th-20th c.).
