After relieving the belanguered town of Kandanos on March 9 Sir A. Biliotti, the British consul, and his 570 men from the combined fleet of the Powers, escorted the Mohammedan population of the town, consisting of 543 male civilians, 1047 women and children, and 340 soldiers of the garrison, to Selino. Some of the insurgents followed the relief party and refugees, and when the coast was reached a tumultuous crowd of armed Christians made a sudden rush and obliged the rescue force to form a strong line across the neck of land from which the refugees were being embarked
