The digital collection of the “Eugenios Spatharis” Shadow Theater Museum of the Municipality of Marousi comprises 453 artifacts that highlight the history and artistic tradition of Greek shadow theater from the early 20th century to the present day. The bulk of the collection consists of figures made of cardboard, treated leather, and later colored celluloid, which comprise the pantheon of heroes of Greek shadow theater. They are accompanied by artifacts and stage props used in the performances. The scenic elements, the performance tools, and thestage props that shaped the theatrical experience of shadow theater highlight the intangible, visual, and social dimensions of the art of Karagiozis. At the same time, the collection includes a smaller amount of archival material, such as photographs, printed material, advertisements, and ephemera, which shed light on the influence and presence of shadow theater in modern Greek cultural life. The collection as a whole reflects the contribution of Evgenios Spatharis and shadow theater to the shaping of modern Greek folk and theatrical traditions.
