Η κατάληψη του Βελεστίνου από τους Τούρκους επέβαλε την απομάκρυνση των ελληνικών μονάδων και την εκκένωση και του Βόλου από άμαχους και πρόσφυγες που είχαν καταφύγει εκεί τις προηγούμενες μέρες. Ύστερα από διαταγή του Γενικού επιτελείου η εκκένωση ξεκίνησε στις 24 Απριλίου με τη βοήθεια του πολεμικού ναυτικού. Ωστόσο η φήμη ότι ο τουρκικός στρατός καταφθάνει προκάλεσε πανικό και αταξία. (EL)
