Μικρά κομμάτια από μάργαρο, το εσωτερικό κοχυλιού, κομμένα σε ποικίλα γεωμετρικά και φυτικά θέματα. Αποτελούν είδος πολυτελούς, ενθετικής διακόσμησης (opus sectile), που γνωρίζει διάδοση κατά την παλαιοχριστιανική περίοδο και χρησιμοποιείται στη διακόσμηση τοίχων και δαπέδων. Αποτελείται από μικρά κομμάτια, τις λεγόμενες κρούστες, από διάφορα υλικά όπως μάρμαρο, μάργαρο (σεντέφι) και γυαλί τα οποία κόβονται σε ανθρωπόμορφα, φυτικά και γεωμετρικά θέματα και στη συνέχεια τοποθετούνται συναρμοσμένα σε εκβαθύνσεις διαφορετικού χρώματος. Οι συνθέσεις που προκύπτουν εντυπωσιάζουν καθώς στο συνήθως σκούρο βάθος αναδεικνύονται τα συναρμοσμένα μικρά κομμάτια.

Small pieces of mother-of-pearl, the inside of a shell, cut into a variety of geometric and floral themes. They are a type of luxurious, inlaid decoration (opus sectile), which was popular during the early Christian period and was used to decorate walls and floors. It consists of small pieces, the so-called crusts, of various materials such as marble, mother-of-pearl (mother-of-pearl) and glass which are cut into anthropomorphic, vegetal and geometric themes and then placed together in recesses of different color. The resulting compositions are impressive as the assembled small pieces stand out in the usually dark depth.
