Engraving with the general view of Mount Athos (EN)

(EL)
The copper engraving has as its theme the general view of Mount Athos with the parallel rendering of the western and eastern sides of the peninsula. The concentration of many holy foundations with miraculous icons and other relics in the same geographical area aroused the pilgrims’ interest. The general view of Mount Athos is one of the frequent subjects in the engravings from Mount Athos, as it is repeated by European and Greek engravers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. According to the bilingual (Greek and Slavonic-Serbian) inscription, this copper engraving was made with the sponsorship of the priest-monk Gabriel of the Vatopedi monastery, in Vienna, in May 1767. The engraver is unknown. The engraving shows Athos, with the setting sun, monasteries, identified by their oval inscriptions, hermitages (sketes) and cells for the monks. Rivers flow into the sea, where sailboats sail, monks fish and sea whales emerge. (EN)
