Η χαλκογραφία έχει θέμα τη γενική άποψη του Αγίου Όρους με την παράλληλη απόδοση της δυτικής και της ανατολικής πλευράς της χερσονήσου. Η συγκέντρωση πολλών ιερών καθιδρυμάτων με θαυματουργές εικόνες και άλλα κειμήλια στον ίδιο γεωγραφικό χώρο προκάλεσε το προσκυνηματικό ενδιαφέρον πιστών. Η γενική άποψη του Αγίου Όρους είναι ένα από τα συχνά θέματα στα αγιορείτικα χαρακτικά, καθώς επαναλαμβάνεται από Ευρωπαίους και Έλληνες χαράκτες σε όλη της διάρκεια του 18ου και του 19ου αιώνα. Η συγκεκριμένη χαλκογραφία έγινε, σύμφωνα με τη δίγλωσση (ελληνική και σλαβονοσερβική) επιγραφή, με χορηγία του ιερομονάχου Γαβριήλ της μονής Βατοπεδίου, στη Βιέννη, τον Μάϊο του 1767. Ο χαράκτης είναι άγνωστος. Αποδίδονται ο Άθως, με τον ήλιο που δύει, μονές που ταυτίζονται από τις οβάλ επιγραφές τους, σκήτες και κελλιά. Ποτάμια ρέουν στη θάλασσα, όπου πλέουν ιστιοφόρα, μοναχοί ψαρεύουν και αναδύονται θαλάσσια κήτη.

The copper engraving has as its theme the general view of Mount Athos with the parallel rendering of the western and eastern sides of the peninsula. The concentration of many holy foundations with miraculous icons and other relics in the same geographical area aroused the pilgrims’ interest. The general view of Mount Athos is one of the frequent subjects in the engravings from Mount Athos, as it is repeated by European and Greek engravers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. According to the bilingual (Greek and Slavonic-Serbian) inscription, this copper engraving was made with the sponsorship of the priest-monk Gabriel of the Vatopedi monastery, in Vienna, in May 1767. The engraver is unknown. The engraving shows Athos, with the setting sun, monasteries, identified by their oval inscriptions, hermitages (sketes) and cells for the monks. Rivers flow into the sea, where sailboats sail, monks fish and sea whales emerge.
