Two-sided engraved copper plate with the Last Supper, the Nativity and the Baptism of Christ.
Side A depicts the Last Supper. This is the only known example of an Orthodox engraving depicting the Last Supper. Most probably, it was greatly influenced by the Western European artistic tradition. The scene is set in an eclectic interior combining elements of Neoclassicism and Baroque, featuring terraced floors and a frame with heavy curtains. Christ is sitting in the centre of a long table; his disciples are positioned on either side. The figure of Saint John leaning on Christ’s arm is worthy of note. Judas is the only one without a halo. He is sitting with one hand on his plate and the other holding a purse with number 30 inscribed on it to mark the infamous thirty pieces of silver. Inscribed below: “NOW FIRST ENGRAVED BY ANTHIMOS, HIERODEACON: 1864: 25 SEPTEMBER”.
Side B depicts a two-part icon of the Nativity and Baptism of Christ. The upper margin is missing because the plate has been cut off.
The Nativity: the centre of the composition is occupied by the cave, the star, and Christ in the manger. On both sides, the Holy Mother and Joseph are kneeling over the manger, with their hands crossed over their chest. Behind them, there is a figure of a shepherd. The animals are inside the cave. In successive layers, on the left, there is a depiction of the Annunciation of the Shepherds and angels in the clouds. On the right, there is a shepherd playing the flute and the three Magi bringing gifts.
The Baptism: the composition is centred around the figure of Christ in the waters of the River Jordan. He is trampling on dragons, symbolizing the victory of Good over Evil. On the left bank, Saint John the Baptist is baptizing Christ. On the right bank, there is a group of angels, one of them holding a shroud waiting for Christ to come out of the river. On top of the composition, there is a depiction of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and God the Unoriginated Father in the clouds. In the left lower corner, there is a depiction of a tree and an axe—a reference to Luke 3:9. The axe lying by the tree roots symbolizes the notion that every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
Inscribed below: “Engraved to support IG(NA)TIOS HI(E)ROM(ONK), WORK OF HIEROMONK ANTHIMOS 1865 II”.
