The Cochrane Archive of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation comprises 863 items and constitutes a significant body of historical sources that shed light on the activity, networks, and role of Lord Cochrane during his presence in Greece in the years of the Greek War of Independence (1821).

The collection consists predominantly of textual material, with correspondence forming its core, complemented by administrative documents, reports, legal texts, catalogues, and a small number of manuscripts and diaries. It is further enriched by a limited set of ephemera reflecting aspects of communication and the day-to-day functioning of the struggle.  Of particular importance is Cochrane’s extensive correspondence with Greek military leaders, political figures, and associates, through which the relationships, tensions, and negotiations among the revolutionary forces are revealed, alongside the international dimensions of the Greek cause.

The archive is multilingual, comprising material primarily in Greek, English, and French, with smaller portions in Italian and Spanish, reflecting the international scope of Cochrane’s contacts and activities.

Overall, the Cochrane Archive constitutes a valuable resource for the study of the Greek War of Independence, offering a multi-layered perspective on naval operations, political processes, and the international networks that shaped its course.

Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, was a prominent figure in 19th-century naval history, renowned for his bold and often unconventional tactics. Following his distinction in the Napoleonic Wars and his involvement in independence movements in South America, he was invited to Greece in 1827 to assume command of the fleet at a critical stage of the Revolution. Although his military performance has been regarded as controversial, the archive highlights his contribution at the political and diplomatic level, particularly in mediating internal conflicts and strengthening international support for the Greek cause.
