Το 1948 εμφανίζεται η IBM Model A standard που συνεχώς βελτιώνεται ως το 1954 με αρκετές νέες λειτουργίες με το πάτημα ενός πλήκτρου όπως ρύθμιση της έντασης της εκτύπωσης, της θέσεως των παραγράφων, των περιθωρίων, του διάστιχου, αυτόματη επαναφορά του κυλίνδρου στην επόμενη γραμμή, της ταινίας άνθρακα (carbon) και δυνατότητα αλλαγής του "καλαθιού" με τα τυπογραφικά στοιχεία.
