The Academy of Athens rare books collection includes 606 items and spans from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It starts at the transitional period of early printing technologies and thematically covers a wide range of letters—philosophy, history, linguistics, geography, archaeology, politics, and arts, with a large part of the collection consisting of theological and liturgical texts.
The oldest work dates to 1499 and is attributed to the Cretan scholar, calligrapher, printer, and designer of typefaces, as well as editor of classical texts, Zacharias Kalliergis. Other notable scholars included among the 127 Creators or Referenced Persons in the collection’s items are Periklis Zerlentis, Spyridon Lambros, Ioannis Gennadios, Ioannis Sakkelion, and Theodoros Flogaïtis.
