Institution : Academy of Athens
The digital collection of the Folklore Center of the Academy of Athens on SearchCulture comprises more than 1,200 textual items, including books, articles, and a small number of periodicals, dating from the 12th to the 21st century, with a particular concentration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Thematically, the collection spans a wide range of genres, from ecclesiastical texts, liturgical services, and hymn books to philosophical works, as well as publications on history, genealogy, education, literature, poetry, and theatre. Notable highlights include rare editions from the 16th to the 20th centuries and foreign-language texts in Turkish, Russian, Italian, and Latin.
The material available through SearchCulture represents only a small part of the Folklore Center’s extensive archive (originally named “Folk Archive” when funded in 1918 by Nikolaos Politis), which has been systematically assembled since the late 19th century. This archive encompasses a rich body of unpublished and printed primary sources, alongside music and audio recordings, photographs, and films, documenting all aspects of folk culture in both its intangible and tangible expressions.
